Liberia’s First Sustainable Community Development
Tyler Island, a small island community of approximately 45 residences, located in Paynesville, Liberia, West Africa, is faced with regular flooding due to heavy rains, poor building construction that result in damage and human exposure to the elements, limited access to healthy food and medical care due to lack of accessibility, unsanitary living conditions, lack of clean energy and drinking water, and poor community development.
Green World Vision and EccoPoint has joined forces with residents of the impoverished island to transform the island to Liberia’s first safe, sustainable, and affordable Green community model.
A team of developers, environmentalists, horticulturalists, and community volunteers, will provide the eco-friendly design solutions, craftsmanship and programming for the new community, preserving much of the island’s natural integrity. The new community will feature sustainable housing, work and recreational areas, a community garden, and more, to support its residents’ daily living needs. In addition, the plan will incorporate a learning facility, medical facility, and house of worship, to support the residents and their fellow Liberian citizens. The overall goal is the development of a fully sustainable community that will serve as a model of green living for future communities throughout Liberia.
“Living in a sustainable environment is something that
the entire world should strive for.”
COCOA AND RUBBER– SOME OF THE ISLAND’S OWN NATURAL RESOURCES
Tyler Island is surrounded by natural flora and fauna, mangroves, tidal marshes and marine ecosystems. Lushes fruit-bearing trees, including mango, cashews, pineapple, and guava grow abundantly.
